The First Wife
Buddha’s Life Lessons -The Four Wives “The First Wife’ | Wisdom | Spirituality
Shakyamuni Buddha in one of his teachings to his disciples used the example of a businessman that was married to four wives: The first wife was smart and cute, and accompanied him like a shadow; the second wife was snatched by him, beautiful and enviable; The third wife, was taking care of his daily chores, not let him worry about life; the fourth wife, was the busiest all day, but he didn’t know what she was busy with.
The businessman was going to travel far, and because of the hard journey, he asked which wife was willing to accompany him.
The first wife said: “I won’t accompany you, go by yourself!”
Shakyamuni Buddha said to everyone, “Do you understand? The first wife is you!”
The first wife is the flesh, and the flesh of a person must be separated from himself after death;
Another version of this story is that there was a king who had four wives and he was on his deathbed. He was afraid of being alone in the afterlife, so he asked the wives one by one: “Would you die with me, will you come with me to the afterlife?”
The first wife, who he loved the most and bought her anything you can imagine: diamonds, gold, elegant clothing and gave her all the luxuries, replied: “I am sorry but I can’t do that and walked away.”
Commentaries:
The first wife is our body. It is not us, but the body that we live in. We like to decorate it with nice clothes, all kinds of accessories and believe it to be ourselves, but in the end, it can follow us nowhere, can’t follow us to the afterlife. We incarnate in this lifetime, we choose a body so we can experience the third dimension and life on earth, to learn from this lifetime and graduate from the school called “Mother Earth” but we mistakenly took this body to be the real “Self”. It is just a vehicle! Keep it healthy, take good care of it but do not take it as real, because what is real will move on to the next life.
